Cleveland Guardians right-hander Luis Ortiz has been placed on non-disciplinary paid leave through the All-Star break due to an ongoing league investigation, according to statements released by both the team and Major League Baseball. The decision was made jointly by the league and the MLB Players Association. The Guardians noted they are not permitted to comment further at this time, and no specific details regarding the investigation were disclosed.

Ortiz, 26, is in his first season with the Guardians after being acquired from the Pirates in exchange for first baseman Spencer Horwitz. He quickly became a regular part of Cleveland’s starting rotation, making 16 starts and posting a 4.36 ERA over 88 2/3 innings, with a 25.1% strikeout rate and an 11% walk rate.

Ortiz had been scheduled to start tonight’s game, but left-hander Joey Cantillo will now take the mound in his place. He’ll join a rotation that currently features Tanner Bibee, Gavin Williams, Logan Allen, and Slade Cecconi. The Guardians have been navigating multiple injuries in their rotation this season, including Ben Lively’s recent Tommy John surgery and a minor setback in Shane Bieber’s recovery from his own Tommy John procedure last year. Bieber has recently resumed throwing.
